Are You Afraid of the LARP?

Saturday, November 3, 2018, 11:00am - Sunday, November 4, 2018, 4:00pm

DMG Workshop • At the Toronto Media Arts Centre (32 Lisgar Street)

Come create an immersive, interactive experience from idea to playtest in a supportive environment with experienced larpwrights!

What’s a LARP?

LARP stands for live action role play. It’s basically “Let’s Pretend” for adults – a type of game or experience that tells a story, acted out in real time by players who improvise all their lines.

All day Saturday, work together or solo to design a brand-new LARP. On Sunday, all the LARPs will be playtested by volunteers! There will be two playtest blocks, with an opportunity for revisions in between.

Is this your first game jam? Do you know nothing about LARP? That’s OK! We invite participants of all skill and experience levels to join, and you’ll have plenty of support.

Participants should bring a laptop, tablet, or notebook (something to compose with). You will also want to bring a notebook, or paper forms, to collect feedback from playtesters. You don’t need a laptop, but we can provide one for use during the workshop – just drop us an email at

Call For Volunteers: Playtesters Needed!

Whether you are an experiences LARPer with lots of game time under your belt, or someone interested in playing a live-action roleplaying game for the very first time, we want you!

On Sunday, November 4, we will run two playtest blocks (one in the morning and one in the afternoon), for all of the games created over the course of the Saturday Jam. Volunteers will be asked to sign up for one or both of the blocks, and commit to:

  1. Playtesting a new game
  2. Providing detailed feedback to the creator after the experience

Volunteers will be provided with details about the content of the game prior to play, though some aspects of the mechanics or narrative will be hidden for impact. Content warnings and genre considerations, however, will all be provided in advance and players can opt out of any content they do not feel comfortable encountering.

Playtesters are an absolutely crucial part of any game-making process, and we want you to be a part of it! Plus, you get to play some super-cool games in their earliest forms!
